A typography-forward practice website for an advocate at the Johannesburg Bar — built to communicate breadth across commercial, arbitration, IP, and public-interest work, while honouring the formal "instructions through chambers" model.
The Project
About Adv. Melaphi
An advocate at the Johannesburg Bar — called in 2023 — and a member of the Duma Nokwe Group of Advocates, the oldest Black advocate collective in South Africa. His practice spans commercial litigation, arbitration, intellectual property, international criminal law, and public-interest litigation.
Client Profile
Junior advocate with an unusually broad pre-Bar apprenticeship — commercial advisory, WIPO Academy training, CALS human-rights internship, ICC International Criminal Law programme, and an Eisenhower Fellowship (2019–2021).
Scope
Full website proposal — typography-led visual direction, numbered information architecture, practice-area structure, timeline of practice, and a clean instruction/contact flow for attorneys.
Goal
Demonstrate depth despite a recent admission — communicate the calibre of his preparation, breadth of practice, and the formal channels through which counsel is instructed.
The Challenge
Authority Without Tenure
A recently called advocate needs a site that signals seriousness — without overstating tenure, and without leaning on bureaucratic legal-industry tropes.
Breadth, Cleanly
Five distinct practice areas had to be navigable and clear, without crowding the page or competing for attention.
Timeline of Preparation
A junior advocate's strongest signal is the apprenticeship that came before the Bar — the site needed to honour that history.
Instruct Counsel Flow
Briefs, speaking enquiries, and consultations all flow through chambers — the contact pattern had to mirror that protocol cleanly.
